Though originally an Italian dish this pasta dish is now an American staple. In fact president Thomas Jefferson was such a fan of this baked casserole that he actually imported both macaroni and Parmesan while working in Paris for personal use. Several decades later in his cousin Mary Randolph's cookbook "The Virginia Housewife" a recipe called macaroni and cheese appeared. Since then the recipe has evolved and it's now mostly associated with southern cuisine though enjoyed nationally.
