Chew & A: Laura Wright

  • By

Actress Laura Wright, who plays the dramatic Carly on ABC's daytime soap opera General Hospital, may be known more for throwing glasses of wine than for drinking them. But that all changes when she leaves the set.  In fact, she and her husband John own a flourishing vineyard in Santa Ynez Valley, California called Standing Sun Wines.  Find out how she got into the wine business and what she's drinking these days.

Tell me how you got started in this business.

John and I moved to the Santa Ynez Valley in 2006 and became good friends with many local wine makers.  We fell in love with the winemaking process from the vine to the bottle.  So, we planted a tiny vineyard on our property and John started working with a friend to learn the business.  We opened Standing Sun Wines in 2007 with 100 cases and we’re now up to 2500 cases.  We opened our  tasting room in September 2011 and it’s been a blast!

Do you have any rules for pairing wine and food?

I don't think there are any rules, it’s really about what you like and what you enjoy.

It’s almost summer. Can you suggest a couple types of wine that are good for the summertime?

Yes, I love our Grenache Rose' and our Grenache Blanc.  I also enjoy Grenache and Pinot Noir in the summer.

More and more quality wines are showing up in boxes and with twist tops. What do you think about this trend?

Well I understand why this is happening, but I love the romance of the cork.  It loses something with you can just twist the bottle of wine open.
