Last Bites: January 28, 2013

  • By The Chew Crew

Did you know that espresso actually has less caffeine than an eight ounce cup of drip coffee? How about that over roasting coffee beans may smell delicious, but your cup of joe will actually taste very bitter? Michael explains the reasoning behind these coffee mysteries on today’s Last Bites when a very caffeinated group of co-hosts discusses the specifics of coffee roasting and brewing espresso at home.

One of the major issues that the group raises is, How much money are you spending a year at your nearest coffee chain? At around $5 per beverage, these high-priced coffee drinks clock in close to $2,000 per year. We tend to mindlessly spend money on these coffee house specials, while it would be more economical to invest in a luxury espresso machine. If you’re not in the market for another piece of equipment that will hog valuable counter space, Michael suggests purchasing a good coffee grinder and an inexpensive French press. Equipping yourself with these tools allows you to enjoy a rich cup of coffee at home without the mindless spending.
