Chew Correspondent Jamika Pessoa visits Philippe The Original in Los Angeles, California to check out the home of the French Dip sandwich. Philippe The Original crafts this classic American sandwich with either roast beef, pork, lamb, turkey, or ham, a freshly baked French roll that has been dipped in the fresh gravy, and a slice of cheese, all alongside tangy coleslaw.
This American staple came to be when a police officer by the last name of French came into the shop asking for a sandwich. The restaurant’s owner, Philippe Mathieu, went about preparing the sandwich and accidently dropped the roll into the roasting pan with all the meat’s juices. The officer said he would take the sandwich anyway, and he returned the next day with a bunch of his buddies to request the exact same creation. And why on a French roll, you may ask? Since the officer’s last name was French, and Mathieu is of French background, this luxurious concoction has always been served on a French roll.
