It’s Monday and the day after the Super Bowl, so many football fans are feeling the pain of having a little too much to drink. Not to worry, we’ve got all the hangover cures here and we’ll tell you which ones will actually work.
This classic cure involves putting a raw egg in a glass and adding hot sauce, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, salt and pepper. Then drink in one gulp. This strange and slight unpleasant cure doesn’t work and in fact, it may make your hangover worse by making you nauseous.
Alcohol dilates blood vessels in the brain, causing a headache. Caffeine can help the blood vessels to constrict, thereby preventing a headache. However you should also drink lots of water. Caffeine and alcohol are both diuretics, which means your hangover could actually get worse after coffee if you don’t also drink water.
Hair of the Dog
A hangover happens when your blood alcohol level drops so if you don’t stop drinking, you’ll never have a hangover – at least in theory. This does work temporarily but we don’t recommend it long term.
Some people think that the endorphins from a quick run will help cure a hangover headache. Unfortunately this doesn’t work. If you’re already dehydrated from drinking, exercise will cause you to sweat more and become even more dehydrated.
Greasy Breakfast Food
Doctors say grease can help delay the absorption of alcohol and therefore protect against a hangover. If you eat it while you’re drinking, the greasy food can actually help coat your stomach and absorb the alcohol but by morning, it’s too late. Your best bet in the am is to focus on replenishing the essential nutrients that have already been depleted.
