It’s been an interesting year in Chatswin and, while I expected nothing less when we moved here, the year has proven interesting in unexpected ways. I made out with Chatswin High’s biggest knuckle-dragger and liked it; I invited George’s ex-girlfriend to a tree-trimming party that he threw for a prospective girlfriend; I worked at a crystal novelty store and was a frigging wizard at moving merchandise out the door. A year ago, I would have deemed any of those things impossible.
Yet, they happened. And, what’s more, they pale in comparison to Mother’s Day in Chatswin making me wonder -- truly wonder -- about my mom for the first time in years. And then who should wind up at the front door but my maternal grandmother. I don’t know what to make of this. I really don’t. It’s not a possibility I ever considered having to deal with and now it’s right here in front of me.
Chatswin’s tried me considerably over the past year, but this is without question the toughest test it’s thrown my way. I imagine it’s the toughest test Chatswin’s ever thrown anybody’s way. And I guess I’d better figure out my plan of attack fast. Maybe I’ll start with hello and work from there. That seems like the right path to follow. But who knows anymore. Chatswin plays by its own rules, and that has never been clearer than right now.
