Declan and Charlotte’s relationship seems only one in the Hamptons that is not based on lies. Let’s break it down, shall we? Emily and Daniel - engaged, broken up, and Emily deceived Daniel every time it would suit her; Jack and Amanda - engaged but Amanda is lying about her true identity; Victoria and Conrad - need I say more?

Declan initially was the pursuer in this relationship. Even though he had reservations about a blue-collar kid from the docks dating an upper crust debutante, he forged ahead and eventually won her heart. Victoria was not very pleased with her daughter’s choice of a partner. She met with Declan and offered him a sizeable amount of money to break it off. Instead Declan went to Charlotte and the two of them decided to deceive Victoria. They would be “broken up” and then use the money to rent an apartment together. It didn’t work out that way though; Declan returned the check to Victoria. He wanted to turn himself into the type of man Charlotte deserved and taking bribes went completely against this. Everything seemed to be great with them…for the moment at least.

The first bump in the road came when Charlotte started to abuse alcohol and pills. She was having a tough time dealing with all the lies and betrayal in her family and needed an escape. Declan wanted her to get help, but it didn’t come in time to save their relationship. At Daniel’s trial, Charlotte testified that she saw a hooded man on the beach (which was the truth and implicated Jack). Declan testified he didn’t see a hooded man and discredited Charlotte’s testimony by stating she had been abusing drugs at the time. Needless to say, testifying your girlfriend is a drugged up liar didn’t go over so well. They were done that instant.

You would think that would have been the end of it, but think again. During season 2 the romance started up again. They were past the dramas of season one could get back to a good place. Charlotte was sober and Declan was over the floozy he was seeing after Charlotte broke it off. They began to talk and it was quite obvious there was still a spark. They started it off slow and it eventually progressed to the point where Declan accompanied Charlotte to her parent’s wedding! In the coming months, these two will be under a lot of pressure. Only time will tell if this teenage romance will make it in the long run.
