David, formerly the coma patient called John Doe and really Prince Charming from Fairy Tale Land, has no memory of his Storybrooke life or his wife, Kathryn. The only person that seems right to him is Mary Margaret. He tells her that he doesn’t remember or care about his old life, and that he wants to be with her. But when Regina tricks him into stumbling into Mr. Gold’s pawnshop, an old curio triggers his false Storybrooke memories. Heartbreakingly, he tells Mary Margaret that he can’t be with her after all, that he instead owes it to Kathryn to try to work things out.
