Regina and David's searches for magic take them to the same person: Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin). He gives Regina that familiar spell book, which she uses to regain some of her powers and take Henry back by force. David makes a "non-interference" pact with Rumple in exchange for a magic potion that leads him to Jefferson and an explanation about his magical hat. Ruby (Red Riding Hood) tells David that the whole town is about to cross the border and lose their true identities in order to escape Regina, and the pair race off to stop them. David gives a stirring speech that inspires the town to get back to their lives, promising he will protect them. When David finds out about Regina kidnapping Henry, he shows up on her doorstep, sword in-hand. But, after speaking with Henry and realizing she's treating him just like Cora treated her, Regina vows that she is going to change. She lets Henry go with David and even tells him the truth that The Enchanted Forest does still exist, The Curse didn't destroy it. But she doesn't know a way to get anyone there or back again.
