In Fairy Tale Land, Rumplestiltskin is shocked and pleased that Belle does return with that straw. She sits with him at his spinning wheel and after a gentle conversation about his tragic past, she kisses him. It’s romantic and beautiful and for a moment the curse starts to break! The scaly exterior recedes and we can see the real Rumplestiltskin again. But Rumple is furious! He can’t believe that Belle truly loves him and instead suspects that the entire thing has been a setup by the Queen. He throws Belle into the dungeon once more, this time for days. When he finally confronts her, she tells him that she truly does love him and that he is a coward for not being able to accept that. He allows her to leave his service, still not able to believe her. A while later, when the Queen visits looking to make a deal, he asks about Belle and realizes that the Queen didn’t put her up to anything after all. But as his hopes of actually finding real love begin to rise, the Queen tells him that the girl was shunned when she returned home and killed herself. Rumple is devastated and later we see him take an ornate, golden chalice from a pedestal and replace it with the chipped cup that Belle had dropped—his last reminder of her.
