In Fairy Tale Land, Rumplestiltskin takes in an old beggar who counsels him. He says that The Dark One is kept in thrall to the Duke because the Duke posesses a dagger with The Dark One's true name engraved in it. If Rumple can steal the dagger, he could control The Dark One instead. When Rumplestiltskin admits that he'd be too frightened to do that, the old beggar suggests that he could take the power for himself by killing The Dark One. Rumple is willing to do anything to save his son, so he sets fire to the Duke's castle and steals the dagger.
