The truth about Prince Charming, or Prince James, is that he's not actually a prince. He is a shepherd and the twin brother of the first Prince James who was also not the legitimate son of King George and his queen. Both sons were procured by Rumplestiltskin for King George. When the first Prince James was killed in battle, King George asked for Rumple's help. Rumplestiltskin convinced James' twin brother to leave his rural roots behind and slay a dragon to claim the life of a prince. The new James managed to kill the dragon, earning King George a lot of wealth from the grateful King Midas, and the hand of Midas' daughter, Abigail. James didn't love Abigail, but he couldn't refuse the offer--the life of a prince came with burdens of responsibility.
