Mr. Gold clearly wants The Curse broken. He is looking for his son, Baelfire, in our world and, for a time, believes the writer August Booth (Pinocchio) to be him. But when August tries to use the dagger against him, he knows that’s not true. Instead he enlists August to try to convince Emma of the truth. That doesn’t work, but when Henry eats Regina’s poisoned apple turnover, Emma becomes a believer. Gold tells her and Regina that, back in Fairy Tale Land, he had a True Love potion that can break any curse hidden inside Maleficent. He gives Emma her father—Prince Charming’s—golden sword. Emma slays Maleficent in dragon form and gets the potion, but he steals the potion from Emma. He is reunited with Belle, whom Regina had under lock and key in the bowels of Storybrooke hospital, and the two of them take the potion to the well in the woods near Storybrooke. He pours the potion in and a dark cloud swirls outward, enveloping Storybrooke. Belle asks him what it is and he replies, “magic.”
