Mr. Gold (Rumplestiltskin) owns a pawn shop in Storybrooke, Maine. Wealthy and alone, he doesn’t have any friends in town, or anywhere else for that matter, but somehow or another, everyone comes to Mr. Gold needing to make a deal. His store is full of knick-knacks and antiques that had to be traded away and somehow Mr. Gold gets the best part of every deal. When Emma Swan first comes to town and encounters Mr. Gold, she can tell he’s trouble, but her pragmatism—and desire to help—would lead her to him just like everyone else.
