The cast and producers of Malibu Country were in Beverly Hills talking about their exciting new show. Here’s the scoop!
Regarding a storyline addressed in the pilot, Reba acknowledges that it’s hard for country stars to stay on the radio due to so many young, talented people coming in. Being on TV helps maintain some staying power. Of course, being ridiculously talented like Reba is helps, too!
Reba wouldn’t really like to be on ABC’s new drama Nashville because she does that in real life, but she wouldn’t mind guest starring. Bottom line – she likes to have fun doing a comedy. Some of the stories that happened to Reba in her family regarding a move west will be translated into the show.
Lily Tomlin was very taken with Reba for a long time. She thought she was brilliant on Broadway in Annie Get Your Gun. She’s from Detroit, but her family is Southern. So this show is a little shout-out for them.
Lily’s first movie was Nashville, so it occurred to her that she’s come full circle. The producers were good enough to let her name her character after her mother. She joked that this will probably be her last project before going to Motion Picture home.
Sara Rue says she did two pilots this season. Both were picked up, but she had stated that Malibu Country was her first choice. She watched countless hours of The Real Housewives of Orange County to research her role.
Jai Rodriguez likes that his somewhat mean, jaded character senses Reba’s moxie toward the end of the pilot. Executive Producer Kevin Abbott adds that Jai’s Geoffrey character will end up becoming Reba’s biggest fan.
Kevin Abbott also says Sara Rue’s Kim character represents Malibu. He also wants to bring back Reba’s ex, Bobby, but wouldn’t say for certain if/when that would definitely happen. But Reba loved this guy, so they hope to keep him involved.
As for us, Friday nights look like they are about to get a whole lot funnier once we head into Malibu Country!
