The Story: A Quartermaine Curse

  • By General Hospital
The first family of Port Charles, the Quartermaines have endured decades of scandal, celebration, love, and loss. Over the years, the "loss" part has become more pronounced. With Jason's apparent death this week, we saw Monica despair to Michael about all the family she's had to part with. She's not kidding. So what's the deal? Is there a Quartermaine curse? If you're a bit new to the show, you might be asking yourself how many Quartermaines have fallen in recent years. Allow us to break down the story for you.

Quartermaines

If there is such a thing as a Quartermaine Curse, it may have started in 1995. That's when both sons of Drs. Alan and Monica Quartermaine were involved in a serious car accident. A.J. Quartermaine got drunk and was behind the wheel when his car ran into a tree. His brother, Jason, was in the passenger seat and suffered serious head injuries. When he woke up, he remembered nothing about being Jason Quartermaine. He ended up shunning his entire Quartermaine identity and adopting the name Jason Morgan (and a colder, more detached personality), before entering a life of crime with Sonny Corinthos.

Ten years later, after a decade of A.J. battling Sonny and Jason for, among other things, custody of A.J.'s biological son, Michael, A.J. met his end at the hands of Dr. Asher Thomas while he was recovering from a broken back in the hospital. It was thought for a time that young Michael might have done him in, but the truth came out.

Quartermaines

The next year, Jason and A.J.'s cousin, Justus Ward, met a similar fate. Justus was a lawyer who ended up providing legal counsel for Jason and Sonny's organization, causing some consternation within the Quartermaine family. When Justus was sent to a meeting in Jason's place, the ambush meant for Jason ended up taking Justus's life instead.

In 2007, the Metro Court hostage crisis claimed the life of Dr. Alan Quartermaine, as Alan suffered a heart attack during the siege and despite the efforts of Monica and their daughter, Emily, he died later at GH.

Quartermaines

Less than a year later, Emily met her own tragic end as she was the victim of the so-called Text Message Killer while attending the Black and White Ball and Wyndemere.

In 2011, Jason's biological son with Elizabeth Webber, Jacob Martin Spencer, was killed in a roadside accident by a car eventually revealed to be driven by Luke Spencer. The Quartermaines mourned the child they never knew was one of theirs.

Jason's death at the pier is only the latest of the Quartermaine tragedies. Has Monica lost the last of her children? Or is there something she's not telling anyone ... ?
