October 17, 2006 - New Orleans PD responds to a 911 call from the Omni Hotel. Someone has fallen eight stories from the rooftop deck. Officers arrive and find the dead, broken body of a handsome young man. In his pocket is a note sealed in a Ziploc bag. It begins: "This is not an accident. I had to take my own life to pay for the one I took…"
Zack Bowen and Addie Hall were both young and beautiful – charismatic fixtures of New Orleans’ bohemian French Quarter. But they were also a pair of damaged souls. A free spirit who wrote poetry and taught dance, Addie was on the run from an unsettling, troubled past. And Zack wasn’t just the beloved bartender and talented musician known throughout the Quarter, but a veteran scarred by his time in Kosovo and Iraq. Zack and Addie fell in love just weeks before Hurricane Katrina. They made the decision to stay in the city to weather the storm and found a paradise in the quiet days after. But as the city slowly recovered, Zack and Addie declined, their passion for each other spilling over into clash after clash – until Zack could no longer keep his demons at bay.
Police follow the directions on the note to an address in the French Quarter, where they find Addie’s dismembered body. He’d strangled her to death nearly two weeks earlier. Spray-painted on the walls: "I’m a total failure…" "Please help me stop the pain..." "I love her..."
This is the story of two lost souls who brought happiness into the lives of many others, even as they couldn’t find happiness themselves. It is a tale of the darkness beneath the surface of a legendary party town, and a pair of doomed lovers in the wake of the storm that decimated a city.
Producer's Note: On June 12, 2012, fifteen months after the interviewees sat down to talk to Final Witness producers about the Addie Hall story, one of the participants, Margaret Sanchez, was arrested and is being questioned about the murder of 22-year-old Jaren Lockhart. To date Ms. Sanchez has not been charged in connection with the murder.
