![For the first time ever, the "Contemporary" dance style was performed as part of the competition. Kelly and Val brought true emotional storytelling to the dance floor with their routine to "Fix You," by Coldplay, and it paid off. Kelly remarked during rehearsals, "[Val's] teaching me how to trust again...it's kind of amazing."

In Week 4, Shawn and Derek took things in a different direction, dancing the Mambo to "Para Los Rumberos" by Santana. They earned their first 10's of the season and finally topped the leaderboard in the week that Paula Abdul joined as a guest judge.
