![For the first time ever, the "Contemporary" dance style was performed as part of the competition. Kelly and Val brought true emotional storytelling to the dance floor with their routine to "Fix You," by Coldplay, and it paid off. Kelly remarked during rehearsals, "[Val's] teaching me how to trust again...it's kind of amazing."

Shawn was another prior Mirror Ball trophy winner. Over the summer she was disappointed by not being able to compete in the Olympics and therefore had added drive to win in the ballroom. For their first dance, Shawn and Derek performed a Foxtrot to "Good Time" by Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen.
