Maris Elder (guest star Whoopi Goldberg) has been holed up in her apartment for the past 26 years. Jane believes this woman, who has special insight into the Drake, can help her remember what happened after she went down the mysterious basement staircase. A dark presence haunts the building in which they reside. It has the ability to open the door between past and present. Maris believes Jane can unlock memories found deep within her mind through hypnosis.
Jane is hurled back in time to October 28, 1927 as she walks though a mysterious red door in the middle of the lobby. She’s at a birthday party for young Jocelyn at Peter Kramer’s place where everyone knows her as Libby Griffin. She realizes why once she catches a glimpse of herself in the mirror. The image reflects the look of a different young woman. Jane overhears Peter talking about a deal where he’ll get whatever he desires. In present day, Maris says Jane and this Libby woman have an extraordinary bond. They just don’t know what it is yet.
Gavin pays Maris a visit. He can’t seem to cross the threshold of her front door. He’s looking to make a deal with her. Maris says she’ll reveal where the stairs took Jane if she’s allowed to walk out of the Drake in one piece. As for Jane, she enlists help from Detective Cooper to learn that Libby died October 28, 1927. The two of them break through the wall of the old Kramer apartment to access a hidden fireplace. Lodged behind one of the bricks is a journal that Peter Kramer placed there. It contains the symbol that’s outside Maris’s door. After Jane leaves the apartment, we can see the troubled image of Libby Griffin inside the mirror.
Jane asks Maris to take her back to 1927. Peter Kramer orders Libby/Jane to take Jocelyn out of the Drake, but the front doors are locked. They hide under a desk as Peter’s friends swarm the lobby. Libby/Jane steps up to the panicked men. She’s quickly taken hostage, strapped to a chair and rendered unconscious. Libby is murdered as part of some sort of occult ritual. She was used in place of Jocelyn. That means Jane’s grandmother’s life was spared because of how Libby protected her. Her past and her future seem to be tangled up within the Drake.
